What happened last night was not fluke; rather, it was a fundamental rejection of everything the Republican Party has come to represent. If the Republican Party wants a future as anything other than a feeble opposition, then it has to reinvent itself, and this blog will be dedicated to discussing ideas on how best to do that.
Here are a few principles that I think must guide our discussion:
1. We need to expand the base - there simply aren't enough Republicans to win, so we have to create new ones.
2. We must reject George W. Bush and his legacy - for the next ten to twenty years, Republicans will need to prove they aren't the next George Bush, and that means his temporary disappearance must become permanent.
3. We can't become a pale immitation of the Democratic Party - we'll need to find real, compelling differences worth fighting for.
4. We need to remember that we support free markets, not free marketeers - throwing tax dollars at our favorite businesses isn't free market capitalism, it's just corruption.
Let the discussion begin!
